2008  Hemostatic Bandage Usage Study - EMS Section


Please fill in all information as it is written on the PreHospital Care Report (PCR) for those patients that have a primary or secondary complaint of bleeding. Hemostatic Bandage use done while enroute to the hospital.

Background: The New York State SEMAC approved hemostatic bandages in 2007 at the BLS level.  Previous designs of these bandages led to some tissue destruction due to an exothermic reaction.  Newer designs have reduced this tissue destruction but the exothermic reaction is still a part of the chemical reaction.  Additionally the cost of these bandages is significantly greater than that of standard bandages so the use of them should be limited to hemorrhage not able to be controlled via standard pressure dressings.

Methods:  Each PCR will be reviewed that has a primary or secondary complaint of bleeding.  Cases of epistaxis or internal bleeding will be excluded.  For those remaining the abstractor will answer the following questions:
